halfway through!

we're halfway through the program!  the last two days have been chaotic, but overall i am really enjoying working and living here, so i'm sad that we're nearing the end...and when this ends, i've only got two more weeks of summer.  i'm not looking forward to either...

swine flu update:
we've got swine flu kid #3 now, though her fever is much lower than fever boy's fever (thank goodness)...i think she's got a milder case or is reacting differently to the same germs.  poor fever boy threw up several times last night as a result of the tamiflu he was taking (we think), and is still in a pretty bad state, though his fever is back down.  we are WIPED OUT, though, from dealing with all of this on top of our ordinary craziness in the office.  we're hoping the worst is over!  just in case it's not, here's a photo of about half of the kleenex we bought:   (note: we are ridiculous.)

in much happier news, we took all 400 kids (minus those in isolation for swine flu) to see the 6th harry potter movie on friday!  we booked two screens at a theater in oxford, so it was a theater full of just our kids and staff.  SUCH a cool vibe to see the movie with 200 kids who were SO EXCITED to be there.  there was clapping at various points when exciting things happened, and screaming at one very scary part.  i think they loved it.

sally, mike, andrew (not pictured), and i bought witch/wizard hats to wear to the screening, because we're cool like that.  the kids loved that we had dressed up a bit, though i have to say walking for 20 minutes through oxford while wearing a witch's hat made me feel like an idiot.  especially because the four of us in hats were all separated, corralling this long line of kids walking through the city.  so i was just that weird woman in a witch's hat.  very fun, though, and the movie was great.  perhaps not a piece of high art, but for a harry potter fan it was everything i wanted it to be!

sunday afternoon was the garden party - every year the founder of the program and his family throw a party for the admin staff and faculty.  but it's england, so of course it was raining and the party was indoors, in corpus christi college's hall.  i ate my first cucumber sandwich with the crusts cut off.  this sounds fancy and all, but tastes like bread and cucumber.  i don't think i'll be having another at any point in the near future.  some PAs and i at the garden party:

this is larry, my co-dean in the pembroke office, not previously pictured on this blog!  he is a good person to complain with, laugh with, drink beer with, and he and i cover each other's shifts if something comes up.  the director and assistant director are our bosses and the PAs technically work for us, so he's the only person in the pembroke college office who is on the same hierarchical level with me.  that means there is a lot of information that we can't pass on to those above or below us, and thus it is so key (as i'm sure all of you know) to like the person you work with so you can commiserate with him/her.  larry is also totally selfless when it comes to the kids on the program - he's the one who's been doing the late night checks on our swine flu kids.  he says, "if it were my kids [he has a 6 year old and a 10 year old] i'd want someone checking on them in the middle of the night."  hooray for larry!  (and yes, i think i'll have my first late night shift this evening, so i'm pulling my weight, too...)
