ode to mccoy's

question: what does every person want after a night of imbibing beers and ciders?
answer: greasy, delicious food.

at pembroke college, your hunger is satisfied by mccoy's kebab van.  every night at about 6pm mr. mccoy himself drives his van onto pembroke square, the street the runs up to pembroke college.  he stays there, selling food until 4am or so.  and i feel certain he makes a killing, this being a college town and him being a man who sells greasy, delicious food.  you can get any of the following things at mccoy's: a cheese burger, a falafel pitta wrap, chicken curry with rice, a lamb kebab, chips (aka french fries), and sodas.   a small chips and cheese (my snack of choice) runs you 1 pound 40, and you will never be happier than when you are eating it.

this is sally posing in front of the mccoy's van.  she is happy because we are moments away from greasy, delicious food.  sally likes lots of vinegar on her chips and i like cheese and mayo on mine, so we can't share.  that's okay, though - we happily place two orders!

mr. mccoy's van runs on a generator that you can hear humming away while you order your food and wait for it to be cooked.  sometimes the lights flicker because of the generator, but that is clearly all part of the "charm" of mccoy's.  kebab vans like this are everywhere in oxford - it seems like there is one van for every 2 or 3 colleges, and i've even heard that there is an organic (!) kebab van somewhere in the city.  here's an SAT analogy for you: kebab vans are to britain as hot dog stands are to the united states.

i saw the following people at mccoy's in the two minutes i was there getting food with sally at 12:15am last night: a couple of intoxicated college-age students, a woman in her pajamas, one of our students (we had late check in because it was the last night), a drunk guy carrying a huge stuffed scooby doo doll, and an ambulance driver (in uniform).  the ambulance had driven to mccoy's and was waiting on the corner for the driver to get her mccoy's.

mccoy's: i will miss thee.
